Thoughts

Lt. General Sir Peter Walter Graham kcb cbe was also known lovingly as Grandpa. He was a knight, a General, and a man who touched the lives of many with his character and accomplishments. He was decorated with the highest honours and who will not be easily forgotten for his deeds. But for me, his legacy is measured not by the medals on his chest, but by the small, everyday moments he shared with me, by the love he gave, and the lessons he imparted. He had a unique way of making us feel special — hiding coins behind our ears, taking us on long afternoon walks in the woods, buying us magnum ice creams on hot summer days and planting pine trees in our names. He didn’t just tell us about the importance of history and family; he lived it, and he made sure we understood its value. Grandpa had an immense love for the past — for our shared family history, for the Gordon Highlanders, and for the country he served so faithfully. But more than that, he had a rare gift for passing on his knowledge and wisdom, especially the Christian principles that guided his life. He wanted us to grow up with integrity, honesty, and a heart full of compassion. Beyond the soldier and the leader, Grandpa was a man of quiet joy. He tended to his roses with the same care he gave to his family. He would make Grannie a cup of tea each morning, and his love for her was evident in everything he did. He had a knack for storytelling, with accents that ranged from Indian to Australian, often drawing us into his tales as if we were living them with him. His sense of humour was infectious, and no family gathering was complete without him dancing in the kitchen to Elvis Presley, or sharing his favourite tunes — from bagpipes to ABBA — on road trips. And if you were lucky enough, you’d hear him whistle a tune with surprising skill. His legacy lives on in the lessons he taught, the stories he shared, the Gordon Highlanders Museum, the bagpipe tubes written in his honour and the love he gave to all his family. To tache of the north. Bydand.
